Rimmel Apocalips, Worth The Hype?

Now a lot of you probably already know about the product I’m going to talk about today but for those who don’t the Rimmel Apocalips first came out last year and took the UK by storm. A little while later they were released in the US, and just recently came to Canada. I can’t even tell you my level of excitement when I came across these in Walmart! I instantly picked up the two colours that I had wanted since I first found out about the Apocalips, Phenomenon (Luna) and Stellar.
Phenomenon is a medium peach nude and is totally right up my alley. Stellar is a bright coral colour which isn’t something I would normally go for since I have such a fair complexion. I have recently been trying to step out of the box myself with brighter lip shades and that is why I went for such a bold daring colour. I figured that since summer is coming to an end I can definitely rock this for a few more weeks before transitioning into my favourite Fall lip colours.
The packaging is really different which I like. It is a nice black tube with a crystalized look to the top of the applicator. On the bottom you can see the colour clearly through the packaging and also when you twist the top open. As for the applicator, it’s a doe foot wand but with a little well in the middle which holds the perfect amount of product for your application. The applicator allows you to be very precise when applying, and the little pocket in the bottom is just ingenious. I don’t find myself having to dip my wand in again and again to get the a good amount of product. I do find these lip lacquers to be very opaque so you do need to watch what you’re doing when you apply them. The bright colour, Stellar, I found stained my lips so if they do tend to wear off a bit it’s not completely noticeable which is great.
The product goes on very glossy but then dries to a satin finish. A huge bonus for me is that these are not on the very sticky side. I was afraid that since it’s a liquid lipstick that my lips would get stuck together and feel gross when applied. Thankfully they are just pleasantly soft and smooth. They do have a smell to them that is noticeable when you are using it, but you can’t smell it once it’s on your lips. I personally don’t mind the smell, but it’s just something worth noting. I didn’t have any issues with feathering which surprised me.
Phenomenon: I noticed some gathering of the product around the corners of my mouth after about an half hour of wear and settling into the lines of my lips, but it wasn’t anything terribly noticeable. I do have to note that if you have dry lips, this shade will make them stand out. After two hours I had a noticeable amount of gathering in the corners of my mouth which wasn’t the most appealing look. Also at the two hour mark the product in the center of my lip had 80% disappeared and gave a dry appearance to my lips. In total this shade lasted about 2 and a half hours on me in total before I *had* to re-apply and I’m not overly happy with this shade in particular. I may try this over top of a lipstick and see how it works for me. I’m willing to play with it and see if I can make it worth for me, so it’s not a lost cause yet!
Stellar: This bright coral is definitely one of those “look-at-me” shades and demands attention when worn. This bright neon is absolutely stunning and a very daring colour for me personally. With this colour I had to be more careful and precise with my application because it does tend to stain and uneven lines are very noticeable. I did not find any gathering with this in unwanted places, any product settling isn’t very noticeable, and this shade lasted much longer than Phenomenon on my lips. This one lasted for 3 1/2 hours on me and I am very happy with this colour!
The Apocalips line has a great selection of brights, with a few nudes in there as well so you are sure to find a colour that you’ll like in this line. They are also pretty affordable and come in at under $8 CAD, contain 5.5 ml of product and can be found at some Walmarts and Shoppers Drugmarts in Canada. I think I will definitely need to pick up some more of the shades and test them out. So all in all these definitely aren’t bad products and think they are worth the hype.
